MAHE organizes the 7th edition of Manipal marathon

Manipal Academy of Higher Education organized the seventh edition of Manipal Marathon 2025 on February 9th, 2025. This year’s theme for the marathon was “Innovation in motion: Embracing technology for health and fitness.” Over 20,000 runners experienced a breathtaking morning, running alongside the scenic Malpe beachside route.  

The first Global Virtual 5K run! 

Well, this was not a usual marathon- wondering why? Well, what was special this year was the ‘Manipal Global 5k virtual run’, was introduced for the first time in India. This made it possible for marathon enthusiasts to participate from anywhere in the world! The whole idea of the event was to make it more inclusive and accessible to a global audience. The marathon was a grand success with 20,000 runners, of which 7,000 runners from all over the world participated virtually. 

Shashi Kumar Nayak, zonal head, ICICI Bank, Karnataka flagged off the 42K run, Alok Kumar Dwivedi, Deputy General Manager, SBI, flagged off the 21K Run; Ambrish Sinha, CEO, UNext Learning, flagged off another 10K Run, Ravindra Rai, Managing Director & CEO, BOBCARD Limited, flagged off the 5K Run.  

Other dignitaries included Yashpal Suvarna, MLA, Udupi, Dr K Vidya Kumari, Deputy Commissioner & District Magistrate, Udupi, Dr Ranjan Pai, President, MAHE Trust, Dr. H S Ballal, Pro-chancellor, MAHE and Lt Gen (Dr) MD Venkatesh, VSM (Retd), Vice-chancellor, MAHE.  

Innovation in motion 

The theme of the marathon ‘Innovation in motion’ emphasized the transformative impact of advancements such as wearable fitness trackers, virtual race experiences, AI-driven training plans, and real-time performance tracking. Runners were able to experience cutting-edge race timing systems, AI-powered fitness analytics, live race tracking applications, and Virtual Reality (VR) booths at the BIB Expo, offering immersive simulations of marathon experiences. 

Another interesting aspect of this run was that over 300 visually impaired persons and more than 200 physically challenged individuals were a part of this event. 

A marathon for all! 

The marathon included a variety of race categories to cater to runners of all levels. A Full Marathon (42.195 km) was designed for professional and experienced runners, while the Half Marathon (21.098 km) is perfect for semi-professional and endurance athletes. The Timed 10K and 5K Runs were organized for amateur runners and fitness enthusiasts, and the 3K Fun Run, which offers free on-spot registration, allowed beginners and families to enjoy the event in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.   

Dr. H.S. Ballal, Pro Chancellor of MAHE, expressed his pride in the event’s growth, stating, “Each year, the Manipal Marathon continues to break new ground, bringing together thousands of runners in a celebration of athleticism, inclusivity, and perseverance. I am thrilled to see how this event has evolved into a platform that not only promotes fitness but also fosters a strong sense of community. I urge everyone to participate, embrace the experience, and take this as an opportunity to embark on a journey toward a healthier lifestyle.”   

The Manipal Marathon has grown into a symbol of determination, unity, and a commitment to a healthier lifestyle. The Global Virtual 5K Run have an opportunity to runners from all walks of life to push their limits, celebrate their achievements, and contribute to a larger movement for health and wellness.
